Magdalen is a solo performance about the lives labored, lost and hidden behind convent laundry walls for more than a century and the men and women who kept them there. Racial tensions exploded between the two groups, leading to a string of violence and a civil law suit. Originally created by Anna Deavere Smith as a one-woman show, Ms. Smith portrayed 35 different characters, and through monologues examined the stress of the time.
